The Hand That Feeds You
November 9, 2009:
I've always been a big believer in giving back to the hand that feeds you, anytime you have the opportunity. I was blessed to have people teach me and give me opportunities. People like my Mom and Dad, Wallace Reed, Betty Craft, Libby Fraas, Liz Hansen, Jerlene Rose, Vickie Miller, and Rob Carr, just to mention a few. Because of that, I try to teach photography whenever I can. I was really happy when Berea College contacted me this summer to be the Photo Coach for their photography students.
I have six students, two are from Kentucky, the other four are from Hanoi, Vietnam, Washington State, Buffalo, New York, and Black Mountain, North Carolina. I only get to work with them for an hour each week, which is barely enough time get our equipment geared up. But these guys are hungry to learn, which makes me eager to teach.

Here was a lesson in Berea on how to use small flashes outdoors. I had two small lights, plus the sun, giving me three light sources.

Aaron from North Carolina

Lynh from Vietnam

Kelsey from Winchester

This past week's lesson was how to work a classroom, with different angles.

I got to hang out with the UK Cheerleaders and Scratch the Wildcat at Cardinal Valley Elementary School in Lexington.

I was doing a Kentucky Living Magazine shoot in Mt.Sterling on Financial Planning, and forgot about the time change when I scheduled it. I wound up shooting the bottom picture on the back of the Old Silo Golf Course right at dark, riding on a golf cart that lost power. I salvaged the shot with studio light and battery pack, and a REALLY low shutter speed.

More stock photos of color and light with Gray Construction.

My favorite image of the capitol. I've shot this same scene about 20 times.
